Default Adorama is having a print sale

16x20 for $4.95 in Matte, Lustre, and Metallic (you may have to create an account and login to see pricing). I'm gonna give it a shot, seeing as how Smugmug charges 17.99 - 21.49 for that size (depending on paper).

Default nice! as a noob.. I assume a 6MP camera should produce pics that print nicely at that size?

I would like to print a few portraits taken with my Nikon D40 (6MP), but I'm not sure how large I can print them. I'm assuming it would suffice for 16x20, but I don't really know if it will look good if displayed in a home. However, I have a 24" monitor that is 1900x1200, and I think the photo looks good on the computer.

Honestly, how large would people suggest for print size?

Their site suggests:
16x20" , Optimally 6000 x 4800 , Min Sugg. 2000 x1600
6 megapixels approx std image res in pixels = 2816 x 2112

Default Ok, technically...

Your ideal viewing distance is the hypoteneuse of the image. The hypo of a 16x20 image is about 25 inches. Using the formula of target ppi = 3500 / viewing distance, gets you a ppi of ~140. Their guideline says 300 ppi (20" x 300 ppi - 6000 pixels) is best, but they'll take as low as 100 ppi (2000 pixels / 20"). Yours should be fine as is. The equipment they use is not like your standard inkjet at home.
