Just purchased my first mac and soon will begin to rearrange my photo library from the old PC and external HDs combo. Followi9ng that I'll be ready to really get a taste of post processing.
Could someone chime in. What would be the firts logical step beyond iPhoto? Aperture? Lightroom? Photoshop? How are these redundant, or are they not? Sorry for all the noob questions. I think it will be much more useful to have answers from the photo-oriented crowd, instead of the mac/pc debating people. TIA! |

iPhoto is really good for basic image management, album creation, ordering prints and photo books, etc. and is super easy to use. Editing tools are very, very basic.
Aperture and Lightroom are competing products. I've only used Aperture, but it's basically iPhoto on steroids. It probably has only 10-20% of the post-processing capabilities as a program like Photoshop, but they are the most frequently used features. So, people are finding they need Photoshop less often. Sorting pictures and comparing versions of pictures in Stacks is a very powerful feature in Aperture. I'm sure Lightroom has similar features. Photoshop is still king for hard core editing. That hasn't changed. I think that if you are familiar with iPhoto and Apple's products, give Aperture a shot. If you are familiar with Adobe's products, give Lightroom a shot. Either way, if you want to do any serious amount of post processing, you're gonna need Photoshop either way.

I recently purchased Aperture for our relatively new iMac and like it so far, but honestly I have not had enough time to really get into it so I have much to learn...

Aperture is great for taking a crappy picture and editing it to make it look natural. But if you want to get really creative with the image, you might feel constricted with Aperture. That's what I have photoshop for, but it's last in my workflow.
