Default Rent a 100-400L or rent a 1.4x for my 70-200 F4 IS for the F1 Grand Prix in Canada?

Going to the grand prix in June.
Haven't got assigned seating so i'm not sure how good my picture taking oppotunity will be anyway, but i'm hiping I can get some good shots.

Thinking of one of the following:-

> Using my 70-200 F4 IS with a rented 1.4x converter. I know that you lose a stop and some IQ but I know very little about TC's

> Rent a 100-400L for the reach

The TC would be cheaper and less lens to drag around but how much of a compromise will it be compared to the 100-400?

Default Apreciate it. I'll reserve the 1-400. Thought about the 2x but from what I read that wont work well

Default OK thanks. TC's are a bit of a mystery to me. I'll go for the 100-400

Default Yeah thats the site i've been looking at. Thought about that but worried i'll miss the zoom

The only prime i've used is my 50 1.8 and thats only for portraits. Never used a prime outside when distances change and subjects move

Default Now does the 'tape trick' let get past the focusing issues?

Default another thing to consider is that the 400 f5.6 is ALOT lighter than the 100-400

it's about the same length as the 100-400, extended (push/pull) but alot thinner.

Default You probably won't miss the zoom if the cars are your main focus.

You'll probably find yourself wanting as much reach as you can get. They don't exactly put those seats in prime locations for picture taking.

That said, the IS may prove to be a helpful crutch when you're handholding shots at that focal length, and even when you're panning.

That said, the 400 prime is significantly lighter and easier to manage over the course of a day.

Default Having used both...

The prime is great for hand-holding all day (lighter), but the zoom is much more versatile (range and IS). The zoom's IQ is very close to the prime's. For the GP definitely go with the zoom. You never know what photo-ops you may run into. Work on those arms first.

Default Used a 100-400L for the Grand Prix a few years ago

Problem was making sure I wasn't bonking the person in front of me or next to me with the lens when it was full extended
