Default L'Oreal Fashion Week

Had an opportunity to try photoing fashion models struttin' down the runway, have to say, interesting indeed, learned a lot.

... and one shooting from the hip.

Feedback received: Don't shoot wide open, shallow DOF is not needed, use F4. Okay to underexpose it a bit, especially when you don't want any blown out detail in the clothing especially if it's white. Try and situate yourself so you're shooting more or less at their waste to keep the camera more or less perpendicular to them ... otherwise if you shoot from top to down, their legs look short which they really hate!

And unlike motorsport photography, there is a very finite space for the media!

Default If you keep doing jobs like this, you'll find out that there is always finite space for the media.

It's a love/hate relationship with people like us. They want us there, but only on their terms.

Recently did a job for CBS Sports in Bozeman, MT covering NCAA Skiing Championships. One of the college team coaches actually put his hands on the lense of the camera and shoved the camera guy backward. That's a big no-no, especially in college sports. No college needs to be buying a $60K camera rig because a coach couldn't control himself. But then again it was NCAA Skiing and not basketball or football. Had that happened at one of those venues it would have made national headlines. Skiing just doesn't rate I guess...

Also, that's a great way to get your *** kicked. Shoving the camera straight back into someones eye generally pisses off most camera ops. This guy took it in stride and didn't do anything about it.

Default Nice - some ?

Was this a paid job? How'd you get in/hear about it? I assume available light (spots), no flash?

Default Wasn't a paid job

These type of shoots aren't my thing, but a friend of a friend had the opportunity to somehow bring in two for one of the shows so I jumped on it when it was offered yesterday.

The lighting for the first one was very inconsistent so I was trying to adjust it on the fly. The Joe Fresh Style show was lit well with massive lights and the ideal setting seems to be ISO 400, 1/160th, F4 from what I heard since I was just watching the show. Flashes are frowned upon since almost everybody shoots in manual. If they happen to shoot at the same time a flash goes off, the photo is horribly over exposed.
