Default First attempt at indoor sports...

My wife and I attended her nephew's indoor soccer tournament and I took some gear along with me. Shooting conditions were difficult (low light, stuck in two spots, etc) but I did manage to capture some of the action. Eight example pics are shown below. I primarily used the 1DIIn + 70-200 f/2.8L IS combo but some of the behind the goal shots were with the 30D + 24-70L. All images were shot in JPEG at ISO3200. Comments welcome.

Cheers,

Brian

Default Re: hey Brian, nice, but the color balance is off a bit

Hi Michael, thanks for the reply.

Being partially color blind (yes, literally) I always struggle with the color issue, so I appreciate any input. Usually I depend on my wife to give a quick glance at a few pics before I upload a gallery, but I didn't seek that quality control check this time (doh!).

Somehow I misplaced the mini-grey card that I got from you a while back (thanks for that by the way), so I set a custom white-balance using an ExpoDisc. Admittedly, this was not ideal because the lighting was slightly different depending on which direction the lens was pointing on the field; in one direction there was some light bleeding in from the concession area, which apparently was different than the primary overhead lights. I was hoping that because the lighting was at least unchanging that my custom WB with the ExpoDisc would suffice.

Do you figure the color balance is off due to WB, or something else? I didn't do any PP except for levels adjustment in CS2. Would auto-WB have been better, or do I need to bite the bullet and shoot everything RAW?

Any suggestions for how to shoot differently next time?

Default they look greenish - too much green/cyan

It's especially visible on the white background as the whites in some images appear green compared to the background.

Skin tones are also off/greenish in some images

I brought a few shots into Lightroom and they are easily fixed...

I guess there's not much one can do in a situation you described, other than put the camera on auto-WB. If you don't need images immediately, I'd definitely suggest shooting RAW, especially in challenging lighting.
