The press release describes the Torq Transfer system as using a hi-vo Morse chain. This suggests a transfer case system similar to what rear wheel drive cars converted to all wheel drive have been using for years. Basically a Morse chain that takes power from the rear output shaft and connects to a front driveshaft. Audi can use this to relay drive to a front differential mounted as far forward as they want. The limiting factor on the cars will be the fact that future base models are reported to still be front drive. This necessitates a front heavy weight bias to make front wheel drive behave its best.
Incidentally, it sounds like Audi is using the Torq Transfer system in conjunction with Torsen T3, since the first press release clearly stated Torsen T3 with 40/60 bias. |
