Default Is the 2.0t engine prone to burning oil?

I have a co-worker with a 2006 A4 w/ 2.0t. She said that it's been burning oiil, but the dealership said that it was normal. Obviously, it doesn't make sense, but I thought I'd check it out.

So, is it common for 2.0t's to burn oil?

Default My experience over the past 35k miles has been roughly

1 qt/5000 Miles, but since I change my oil every 5000 it just gets to where it needs a quart and it's time to change.

Default Some oil consumption is normal in all engines....

Most engines will burn 1 liter between 2000-5000 miles and it has a broad variation. Some will not consume hardly any. Back in the day, we did not consider a rebuild needed until a quart in 400-600.

But today, with the cats needing it, and ultra precision machining, better metal, super rubber seals, better oil and the really good fuel air mixture control, modern engines use very little, but they will use some.

Oddly, the thing hardest on oil consumption is number of cold starts per engine hour AND how you drive the car during warm up. If cylinder pressures are kept lower, i.e. no full throttle until full water temp, and RPM less than 4000 then there is less consumption. Once the engine is warm, the pistons fit the bore properly, the valve guides have sealed and the motor will not lose much oil.

One other thing regarding wear. Once warmed up, full power, by itself, does not cause much engine wear, but high RPM's do.
