Default $40 oil filter???

Anyone have any insight into the $40 oil filter (yea, I know they're $25 aftermarket for Mahle or Mann)? I see many places advertising this HUGE filter (with huge price), while others show a $7 application, obviously smaller.

Any insight on what the difference is, and why they need such a beast to filter the oil on 4.2s?

For the record, this is for a 2002 S6 avant.

Default More Oil Capacity + More Cylinders + More HP = Bigger Oil Filter

Default Doesn't make much difference. Compare to 7 liter 'vette. I'm an engineer - I get the basics.

In fact, compare to the BMW v8; the AMG v8; any american V8; the biturbo 2.7; blah, blah.

This thing is HUGE. And EXPENSIVE.

Your logic is fine, but doesnt answer why a motor 35% bigger than the 6 gets an OF 3x as big, which only holds 15% more oil (my 2.7T S4 took 6.75 qts). And is less stressed.

Not adding up. There's some reason, bt sheer size isnt it.

buy a Honda, the oil filter is smaller than the filter on my Deere. Please, the oil is what keeps the machine running, don't skimp here. Spend less on tree air fresheners.
