Default Very worn out rotors except for the edges... how do i remove the caliper

I'm doing the front, its not in gear, i've removed the two slide pins and have been trying for half an hour to pull the caliper off? Should I bang on it with a mallet or something? I'm thinking that the pads are pretty much embedded in the rotors because the rotors are so worn that the edges are not as worn...if that makes any sense.

Also, before I gave up and put the tire back on. I couldn't get the wire clip around the caliper and pad. I left it off. Should I be concerned?

I have an a4 1997 if that means anything.

thanks!

Default 1. open the bleeder and try compressing the piston. the pads are most likely not clearing

the lip on the rotor.
2. make sure you put the anti-rattle spring back on.

Default Here's another tip

You can take the edge of the rotor furthest away from the caliper and pull it toward you. This acts as a lever when the caliper is on the car with the pads in place. It will force the pads futher apart inside the caliper. Remember to loosen the cap on the master cylinder resevior first. Or better yet loosen the bleed screw to keep from forcing dirty fluid back up thru the system.

If that does not work, get a good sized C clamp. Put it in the middle of the pad on the outboard side of the caliper, then find some sort of platform to use on the back of the caliper for the other end. This is a good way to fully retract the piston, but do not force the piston once it gets really firm.
