Default How do I make BluRay work without HDMI?

Boss just gave me a BluRay player for Xmas. I've heard something about you only get the HD picture over an HDMI cable? Is this true?

I have an older 50" 1080i/720p plasma that only has component and DVI inputs. It predates HDMI. Likewise, my receiver only has component inputs and outputs for video switching. That said, the picture on my TV is still fantastic and the receiver is a $1200 Denon from just 2 years ago, so I'd hate to have to upgrade over this.

What do I need to do to make this work?

Default You should get 1080i/720p with a HDMI/DVI adapter.

Default Nole: this will give you video, but you'll have to run the audio separately.

You can run RCA cables into the TV and also an optical digital audio line into your receiver.

Default Which BRD player do you have?

Yep, HDMI - DVI adaptor should work for you to get 720p. It'll still look great on a 50" set.

If it has 6 channels outs, using them will give the best sound - so long as your player has the TrueHD/DTS-HD decoders built-in. Optical and coaxial cables don't carry this info'.

Default samsung bd-p1400

Click the image to open in full size.

My receiver is the Denon 3805. I was planning on using the optical audio cable to get sound form the samsung to the receiver. This receiver doesn't have TrueHD or DTS-HD in it (it's 2 years old). However, I do have a properly wired 7.1 speaker system in the walls (I planned ahead).

Default The samsung bd-p1400 has TrueHD and analog audio outputs

The Samsung should be able to decode the TrueHD and provide the analog signals to your Denon receiver. You need RCA cables (like the red/white ones) to connect the Samsung to your Denon. You'll connect them to the red/white "EXT. IN" inputs on the left rear of the receiver. This will be better than the optical audio cable.

Default 2nd

Be sure to select 'uncompressed' (or whatever it's listed as) in the audio part of the disc's set-up menu. It doesn't default to it, so you have to select it every time you load a movie (or when you tuen the machine back on if the movie is still in there).

Default the bd-p1400 only has 5.1ch analog audio out

And I Have a 7.1 setup. I used to have 6.1 at least with my old setup using the optical audio cable and Dolby Digital EX or DTS ES. Am I supposed to just revert back to 5.1 now?

Also, I put in the first movie yesterday, using the optical audio connection, and I couldn't even get Dolby Digital anything. What am I doing wrong here? Receiver defaulted to Neo6 or some such crap.

Default Re: samsung bd-p1400

If you are using the optical cable you need to go into the movie's set-up menu for audio and select Dolby Digital/DTS. But with an optical cable you aren't able to benefit from the TrueHD or the DTS-HD/uncompressed audio as those feeds can only be carried via HDMI or (in your case) the 6 ch. output. Best to use the 6 ch. output for all your movies, that way you miss out on nothing. Using good cables for the 6 ch. output is well worth it, particularly with high quality audio feeds.
