Default Comcast/Motorola 6412 initial impressions

The installer was fast but clueless. He told me that you cannot set the output resolution, that it's, 'automatic,' but when I finally cracked the manual it tells you how to do so quite clearly.

I quickly set up some 'season passes' - relatively easily but while it has an option for 'first run only' it immediately started recording/scheduling many shows that were NOT first runs which kind of sucks as it means I'll be forced to use time/date recording rather than simply name based. It helped that there was a West Wing marathon going on as I was able to immediately identify the problem. The TiVo version of this feature works pretty well whereas this seems to work not at all.

I recorded 2 shows last night, 24 and Las Vegas, both 1hr long, and the drive shows 15% full which means that I'll probably get more like 13 hours instead of the advertised 20hrs of HD. I'm spoiled with my mod'd TiVo which gets ~120 hrs of SD. We'll only use the Comcast box for HD but still, 13 hours is pretty weak.

The remote has a decent layout/feel but no backlighting - I'll simply reprogram my Harmony but I really wish companies would spend that extra 15 cents and backlight these things. There's a repeat button, about 10 seconds, kinda long but no 30 sec or commercial skip. The slow motion is superior to TiVo's and there are more levels of FF/RWD on the Comcast box.

I also played with In Demand (ID) last night and overall I have to say it's FANTASTIC! I was able to watch the 2 episodes of Huff that I've missed and that also means I don't need to 'season pass' Huff or Deadwood as the full seasons are available on ID. The PVR features are limited to pause/FF/RW and play - no repeat button while on ID mode. Also it's mostly SD not HD which is kinda a letdown.

More later as I get more time to play with it.

Default depends on your display - I set mine to 720p as it's closest to native for my TV

I left the other ones alone.

You can d/l the manual from Comcasts website FYI and there's a section on what all that stuff means

Default Set Top Box - Just turn off the box, either at the STB or with the remote.

Make sure you keep the TV on though. Once the box is off, hit the "menu" button and a set-up menu will appear with mostly self-explanatory options.
