after a weekend of research I have narrowed my purchase to the following:

ONKYO TX-SR702S Home Theater Receiver for Audio System

or

YAMAHA HTR-5790 7.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver - Black

The receiver will be used mostly for video entertainment but it will be nice to have a sound unit for music enjoyment as well. The Yamaha is topping the list but would appreciate any comments.

I've had an RX-V1400 for a year now and I'm pretty happy with it. No problems.

I had an R-V1103 before that and it served me well for five years.

Sony TA-E9000ES(pre-pro) with a TA-N900ES(5-channel amp) combo can be had for less than a grand.

Sony STR-DA777ES is very good as well ($6-700)
