After considering the AMI unit and install as a potential Christmas gift to myself I had a few questions to brush up on. I know that there is the possibility to use a USB based mode of playing music; as you can also use the bluetooth dongle, or the ipod jack.

1. I'd like to use both my iPhone as well as a external hard drive via USB. Is it possible to simply switch between the two in the MMI?

2. I know there is a official Audi branded external USB hard drive. I'm sure that if you use another usb powered hard drive such as a simple western digital drive you can use that as well. (As long as it is formatted in the correct format; I'm guessing FAT32 not NTFS) Correct?

If these two options are possible I'd most definitely be getting one for this Christmas.

Thanks for future replies.

Update:
It seems after I found some information for #2; the Audi limited edition external HDD is 250GB and pre-formatted to be FAT32. This confirms my thoughts in thinking any usb-powered external hard drive would work.

You cannot have them both plugged in at the same time because AMI has only one cable interface. You would need a USB interface cable for the hard drive and an iPod dock connector interface cable for the iPhone. Even if you connected the iPhone via bluetooth, the bluetooth dongle plugs in via a USB interface cable (which means you still can't plug in the hard drive). Of course if money was no object, you could just remove the CD changer and install 2 AMI units (assuming MMI source selection would see both, this is where you select between CD changer, AMI, and TV/Aux Video/DAB (if you have TV Tuner/DAB module installed).

Yes any USB hard drive (or USB thumb drive for that matter) will work when properly formatted. (I'm confirming your confirmation)

Well thanks for the reply. After thinking of it, I wouldn't even use the HDD function anyways as I'd just use the iPhone's playlists. I just think its horse crap that the bluetooth dongle is so expensive. Just complete crap.

Seconds before opening an new browser window to check this forum, I was looking at price of the bluetooth dongle on kufatec.com and thinking the EXACT same thing.

Did you tap the "CD" button? The CD buttons toggles between AMI and CD changer.

Can you tell us more about your car - MMI s/w level, what A/V devices are installed, W12 w/DVD option, aftermarket TV/DVD, US vs. European car?

Chances are your best bet to diagnose this problem is to run the VAG-COM diagnostic software. Do you have access to VAG-COM with a CAN bus cable?
