Default '07 A6 4.2 Engine Issue

***CROSSPOSTED IN THE 4.2 ENGINE FORUM AS WELL***

About a week back, the MIL started flashing and the engine would idle rough and misfire during driving. Brought it to the dealer service and they indicated the coils were shorted and needed to be replaced. Done.

On the drive home from the above repair, same symptoms appear. I bring it back to the dealer and he tells me one of the replaced coils was shorted from the supplier and needed to be replaced. OK. Not pleased, but done again.

Picked up the car this morning and no problem on the drive home (about 20 miles). This afternoon, I go for a drive and after a couple miles, the MIL starts flashing again and the engine is giving me fits. On top of these issues, I notice that everytime I drive off from a stop I see thick blueish smoke billowing out from my tailpipes (some poor soul behind me got the whole Batman smoke screen). Got home and tried to start the car to pull into the garage and it just dies.

My question: Does this sound like bad coils or do you think there's something else seriously wrong with the engine?

I'm definitely not bringing the car back to that dealer. I will have to have it towed somewhere else and was hoping that I could have a little more information for the new service department. Also, would it make any difference to call AoA or is that just a waste of time?

Thanks for any info.

Default Take it back to the dealer....reason why....

If there is a lemon law in your state, then they have three ops to fix it...if they dont then you should be able to get a replacement. Since this is a major issue, expect the last time you take it in to last quite a bit and get a time frame on when they will fix it. I would also get your regional rep involved now.

Just My Opinion...

BTW, blue smoke is not good. You have serious engine problems...I would say your car is crap and lookup lemon law in your state...call a lawyer for a free 1 hr advice about lemon law. Look for a specific lemon law attorney.

Default I figured as soon as I saw the smoke that I was SOL. As for the lemon law ...

As for the lemon law, here in IL it only applies in the first 12 months of vehicle ownership. I'm in month 16. I'm still going to call a lemon law attorney just in case.

Do I just call AoA to get the regional manager's information?

Also, do I really want to bring it back to the same dealer as they are obviously inept. Would it make a difference to bring it to the dealer where I bought the car? It's a little further away, but might be worth it.

Default To be honest with you, it doesn't sound too serious. If it burned enough oil to create the smoke

that you speak of it would run at all. So you begin by stating that the car ran fine until the rough part began. So here's my theory. The ventalation of the crankcase is suspect. When you drive it's building up pressure and forcing oil into the combustion chamber where normally it would be vented into the intake chamber. It then shorts out the plugs and then the coils. SO here how to prove my theory. When your car acts up. Pull over and take off the oil filler cap. Careful because pressure could blow hot oil on your hands. (IT SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY PRESSURE IF NORMAL) Your symptoms should immediately clear. If the coils are shorted then don't expect the engine to run better, but the blue smoke from the start should stop. Then tell dealer to fix the PCV valve.

Default An update

OK. So the service department ran a bunch of tests and had no clue as to what the problem is. They escalated the issue to the Regional Audi technician (my call to AoA seemed to expedite that a bit) whose solution was to replace cylinder #5, all coilpacks, and the injector. They're keeping the car for a couple more days to make sure the issue doesn't reoccur but feel this was the solution.

Now, with my limited knowledge of cars and such, does replacing a cylinder represent an issue with the future viability of the engine? Is it a problem to replace a cylinder (aside from the cost - I'm still under warranty though)? Should I be pusing for a whole new engine?

Default It's impossible to replace a single cylinder since it is part of the engine block.

Perhaps they meant piston #5 but even that is a tremendous amount of work.

Since you are saying they are already done with the repair then it is most likely they just replace the coil pack, spark plug, and injector for cylinder #5. However I have serious doubts this will eliminate blue smoke pouring out of your exhaust.
