Default Key Battery Dying??

I have a 06 A6 with the smartkey, anyone else experience their Key Battery dying with 16 months or so. I do not see how this is common for a car of this price.

If your's did die, did the stealership charge you to replace or cover it. They are telling me Key's are only covered for 12 months and arguing with me over the $12 charge. I HATE Audi Service

Default you're whining over a $12 charge? Mine died after 10 months and went to radioshack and bought a new

battery for less than $5. Go change it yourself it's not rocket science. snap the cover out, replace the battery which is stuck on the cover then you snap it back in place.

Default not whinning about the charge, more how it was handled

Audi service where I live (1 dealer) is a PITA.

I posted right after I hung up, probably should have taken a breath first...

This is my 3rd new audi (considering by a Q for the wife) and just found it odd that the key died so quickly, however the more I thought about it, it does transmit a constant FM signal i believe so it would make sense.

Default Re: Key Battery Dying??

Go to Rat Shack and buy a spare battery. It's a couple of bucks. I get less than a year out of a battery. You got 16 months. Way ahead of the curve. I would not complain.

Default Always replace the keyfob battery yourself! -under $4 USD.

Somebody actually once paid ~$50 USD to have a dealer do it. Ouch!

They last about ~15 months. It's super easy to replace on your own, You just need to pry it open in the right places. There are two spots: Open the key (with the button towards you - we will call the button side the front half) - under the "locked" symbol in the open cavity where the key was you will see a recess (at the back half) about 3.5 mm long. That's one. The other spot is the length of the loop for the key ring (also part of the back half). Be gentle as to not break the plastic. The first time you do it it is a little scary -but you will get it.

Good luck.

John

Things every A6 C6 owner should know:

1.) To reboot your MMI, press the Setup button, the MMI center button (or mouse), and the button to the upper right of the mouse simultaneously for just a second or two.

2.) To unlock a stuck transmission, remove the ashtray to expose a little cover. Remove this little cover and there is an emergency release rocker switch. Press and hold down the switch with a screwdriver or pen. Now you can slide the transmission into neutral. (Don't forget to also depress the button on the shift ****.)

3. The key fob takes a #2032 battery. Replace it every 18 months (or sooner). Don't be afraid to replace it yourself.

Default bttery type is 2032

Really easy to do like Johnstay mantioned. Just push the two tabs out with the key open. A small computer flathead-screwdriver comes in handy. Battery type is 2032.

Thanks John, saved me a trip to the dealer.
