And be sure to keep varying your rpm's whenever you think of it. The car itself will open up a bit at 5000 and at somewhat regular intervals thereafter. You won't be seeing the best the car can do until around 30,000 miles.

My '01 A6 4.2 really opened up the last 2 years I had it. Literally, the car drove better on its final trip to A-B than the day I bought it. One more reason why I almost cried turning it in. I gunned it on that last cloverleaf (from 880 onto Stevens Creek) and took it at 70mph...effortlessly with the S-03's emitting a slight squeal...tiny bit of 4-wheel drift. She glistened in the Noon-day sun, her exhaust purring as they drove her to the back of the lot. And I still looked at her, thinking "That's one fine car" and wishing I could keep her.
