Default Just Checking: In a 90CS can I replace the thermostat w/o bumper & Timing Belt removals.

I think there are posts that describe getting to the thermostat both ways. I'd like the easier. One describes it as possible to replace the thermostat with the help of a mirror after removing the serpentine belt. Is that right?

Default you don't have to do any bumper removal on the B4's, jsut take out the fans and you have plenty of..

room. A4's you must remove the front end

Default I think I'm going to have to attempt this as well...

Seems like my nearly-new thermostat is sticking open. I've read that you can slip it by the timing belt but that it's a really tight fit.

Default Did it! Lessons Learned from Changing Thermostat in 1993 90CS

- If the temperature gauge hardly moves after ten minutes, then the thermostat was to blame.

Default Lessons Learned - Easy to remove electric fan, obvious bolts and clip

You want to remove the fan, to get room.

You don't have to disconnect the electricity to the fan, just set it aside.

Three 10 mm at top, clips at the bottom.

Default Lessons Learned - Easy to do the serpintine belt

On the tensioning idler for the main belt, there is a space to insert a large size hex wrench. Insert the hex wrench, then place a two foot pipe on the hex wrench and pull back, this will give you all the slack you need to put on the serpintine belt.

Default Lessons Learned -- U can change thermostat without removing timing belt, but

U can change thermostat without removing timing belt, but there is not a lot of space to work. I think the engine design is for one to remove the timing belt when getting to the thermostat, but I had fear of doing that, and slowly you can change the thermostat without removing the timing belt.

Also, the thermostat housing does not look like an old school thermostat housing, so you might want to take a look at a picture to have the location and design in mind. The housing is elongated shaped, but the thermostat is located more to the center of the engine. Otherwise you might be deceived to think the thermostat is closer to where the hose exits the engine.

Also there are only two bolts on the thermostat housing, #10. Put a rag into the timing belt area to avoid that a socket falls into that space when you are struggling with the bolts on the thermostat.

Thanks forum for your help.
