Default Coolant in oil after new headgaskets...

It's a long story, but suffice it to say that I bought a new used motor for my A6, and after many months of working on it sporadically it's now installed and the car is back together. While I had the replacement motor out of the car I replaced all gaskets and seals, including the head gaskets. I have no reason to believe there was any problem with this motor before I got it -- I replaced everything "while I was in there"...

Anyway, after a total of about 10 minutes of idling and 5 minutes of driving (w/ smokescreen coming from the tailpipe) with the new engine, there was something like a quart of coolant in the oil. The oil was very thin and watery. The coolant was slightly brown, but it seems most of the contamination was in the water->oil direction.

(I am leaving out the part of this story where I seriously debate the merits of driving this car into the Mystic River and claiming that it was stolen.)

So far I have done the following:

- Separate oil cooler from pan. Pressurize cooling system to 25 PSI. No drips from cooler.
- Leak down test on all cylinders. Consistent readings, no bubbles in the coolant tank.
- Tighten all head bolts (new w/ gasket) 1/4 turn.
- Pressurize coolant system at 15 PSI and leave overnight. There was a small puddle this morning near the oil drain. This leads me to believe that there is still a slow leak.

I did not send the heads to a machine shop when I had them off. I cleaned them up with a roloc pad and reassembled.

I am looking for ideas on what else I can try before pulling the heads and having them machined.

Default is it possible the coolant was already there when you re-assembled the engine,

try refilling the engine now that its semi flushed out. The coolant and oil could have been sitting in the wrong sections from when the motor was disasembled....just a guess

Default Yeah, I hoped that was the cause. But I don't think so, there's just too much coolant.

However, I will definitely try refilling with fresh oil before I do anything significant...
