Default do you have to take this whole part out of the car? Is there not a way to just remove the cruise..

control arm? Maybe it's easier than it looks to get that whole thing out. Also, did you just work around the whole assemlby as you did the cleaning? Thanks Bryan!

Default Take the whole part out...

It is really simple after removing all of the trim. T^he whole peice needs to be removed. You can sperate the stalk into two different parts if you want by taking out the remaining srew on the back side. When taking the switch apart you need to pull the wires as far out as possible. This will let you work around the assembly and nake it much easier.

I am posting an update so please check that out as well.

Default UPDATE!!!

OK this is important and maybe will help any still having trouble. I have put two of the switches in my car and both seem to work perfectly most of the time. The other two were just tested using the methods from my posts and checked out perfectly. Yesterday I was cruising down the highway at about 80 with the cruise on (had been on for about an hour) when it suddenly shut off again. I might add that this was the first time the cruise had worked in months. After playing around I could not get it to come back on at any speed above 60mph. But it was perfect at speeds below 60 down to 40. I mean absolutely perfect! Engaged every time. I never had this kind of accuracy with the cruise. So the procedure really does work but I had to find what was causing the problem still at higher speeds.

I have checked everything else, including vacuum, etc... So I figured it must be some sort of vibration problem at higher speeds that is not present at lower ones kicking something off. I went to the clutch pedal and noticed I had some play. I tightened it up a bit and also adjusted the vacuum swtich and that seemed to fix the problem. I also noticed that upon removing my clutch pedal the plastic bearings were cracked increasing the play. There was nothing I could do about this so I just left it alone. Let me know if you guys have any other fixes for why it works at lower speeds but not higher ones.

Also, I forgot to mention in my original post that once you have cleaned the switch it takes 15 or so miles of highway running before I could get it to turn on at all. After that it works everytime for me. I am asumming the because the battery gets disconnected for the airbag removal it puts the ECU in a safe mode until all diagnostics can be run after the battery is connected again. This must diable cruise for a short time or something. It was like this for both of the switches I installed. Just wanted to mention it.

The first owner of our car was a smoker, so I've always assumed that's what gummed up the switch.
