Account #: 63635 In Reply to: Three beeps on startup . . . any definitive answer? posted by Dunkelstar on 2006-07-20 09:15:40 Your resolution may be different, but I suspect not. First, I hope that everyone who has experienced this issue, has had it documented on a previous warranty service visit. My hope is that AOA gets reamed for this because, in my opinion, based on previous posts on this board (going back as early as late 2002), they know this is an issue for some of us, and because of my long frustrations with AOA and my dealer in reaching a resolution on this issue. Also, I suspect that AOA has "selectively" chosen to if-at-all-possible ignore taking care of this issue in-warranty due to the costs involved. Here's the deal. I have dealt with this issue with my dealer for about two years, covering over 35K miles, until I finally got it fixed at my 50K (last) warranty service. Long story short, I was lucky enough to talk directly to an Audi Master Tech about this issue and its symptoms. Almost immediately, and without any hesitation, he told me it was the Central Locking Horn and he has dealt with it enough times to know that his dealership always carry this part in inventory. He told me to tell the Service Advisor that I wanted this part looked at when I brought my vehicle in for its 50K and whoever the tech was working on it should be able to properly diagnose that the board is bad. Here's the info you need to tell your service advisor. The part they need to check is called the Central Locking Horn. I have the part number somewhere, but just call your dealers part dept and ask them for the part number and the cost (my dealers part dept quoted me in the $280-ish range just for the part) <** UPDATED -- part number and description on my copy of dealer invoice is: #8L0-951-605-A; Siren **>. When you take you car in for service, give them that part number and description. This part is nothing more than a circut board that is part of the security system. Where exactly this board is located, I don't know, but I suspect the "beeps" emanate from the board itself, due to the description/name of the part. Tell the service guys you need a tech to look at the Central Locking Horn, the diagnoses is to run a voltmeter across the connections (there are three or four) and to see if one has a low volt/amp reading across it. Their tech manuals should have a procedure that explains how to do this trouble shooting and the volt/amp range they should be reading on each connection. This was the problem with mine. The short is intermittent and does not happen on every start up, so it is nearly impossible for them to ever replicate the beeps on startup. But the procedure, if done correctly, should find the short in the board. How do I know this? I read the "dealer" copy of my service visit paperwork -- their is information on their copy that you do not get on your copy, the techs are very specific on what EXACTLY they do on each issue for that visit. You will find natta, zippo information in Bentley on this part. Yes, the Central Locking Horn does have a battery in it, but the speculation here on AW is that it is not replaceable by itself, that it requires the whole unit to be replaced. The resolution I experienced confirms this. The purpose of the battery is to supply power to the security system in the event that the main battery goes dead or is by-passed in some way by persons with dishonorable intentions toward your car. ** UPDATED -- See this thread on the TT forum on the DIY fix for a dead/weak battery in the Central Locking Horn** No, VAG'ing your car will not tell you if the battery is low on the board, I had this pretty much confirmed by Ross-Tech. In fact, my suspicion is that VAG-COM cannot detect if the battery is dead on the board due to the fact that you must have your ignition in the ON position to use VAG-COM, and therefore all the electrical systems are drawing on the main battery, and any backup power supply would be by-passed. |
