Default 944 Turbo Track junkies....what would I need to look for when buying a K27 driven 944?

Yes, I know, I should perhaps browse the Porsche forums for that but you guys have been such a great support and help that I'd rather take your opinions first.....

Finally lined up a 944 T/K27 for a test drive, not a very pretty example but that doesn't matter. It does have a Radio with CD....that's the last thing I'd expect in a Porsche....too much weight ;-)

Timing belt is one thing that comes to mind and surely replacing all the liquids, well mostly.
Besides using some common sense, what else likes to go sour on these cars?

TIA !!!

Default Hopefully the 944 guys will chime in, but I would also post on the Dorki forum

which I've found to be as useful as the allroad forum.

Good seeing you this past weekend. )

Default Thanks Erich, I'll sure pick their brains and perhaps she'll be ready for WG in August, but

definitely for VIR in November :-)

I guess the allroad has now officially become a towing vehicle.....she needs a break anyways :-)

Default As Fairfax 2.7T will confirm, ask whether the head gasket was replaced?

It seems that the 944T go every two years through a head gasket. This is a pricey job. Make sure the gearbox is in good shape and the clutch as well. I got mine in perfect condition except the timing belt, water pump, etc need to be replaced.

Check Dorkiphus.net and Rennlist.com for more guides for buying a 944 or 951.

Default Thanks Dimi, the seller posted about 30K on the T-Belt and it should be replaced soon, he just

responded to setup a test drive so we'll see how it feels with the clutch, tranny, oil pressure etc pp....

Are there any upgrades for the head gasket available? Something like a racing version based on metal and other composites?

Default My biggest problem has been over heating, which is not rare in 944 Turbos.

Those little 4 bangers putting out a lot of power need a cooling system that is in tip top shape. This issue tends to only surface when it's being pushed on the track, so my PPI did not pick up that my car runs really hot on the track when the temp is 85+.

The head gasket on 944 Turbos does seem to go every few years. Just write it in as a maintenance cost.

There will be oil leaks. You need to have someone familiar with a 944 turbo to look it over carefully, and use this as a negotiating tool with the seller. The most common areas are air oil separator o-rings, oil cooler area (very close to the oil filter), balance shaft seals. Also, like any old car, there is a possibility of steering rack leaks.

Good luck. You really need a good Porsche shop that is familiar with 944s to give it a good looking over. Get to know that shop, because you're going to be spending a lot of money there!
