Senate President Richard Codey said he's tired of seeing drivers swerve to avoid hitting potholes when he's driving on Route 280.
After months of witnessing near-misses, he sent a letter Monday to Department of Transportation Commissioner Kris Kolluri asking for the "deplorable road surface conditions" to be repaired. "As you know, Route 280 is a major commuter thoroughfare in the northern portion of our state and, as such, it is heavily relied upon by thousands of commuters on a daily basis," wrote Codey. "In light of this, I ask that the Department of Transportation focus its immediate attention on repairing the countless potholes that checker the length of this highway and its exit and entrance ramps." DOT spokeswoman Erin Phalon said the department plans to fix the potholes as soon as possible and that the DOT has repaired potholes 91 times on Route 280 since last July. In addition, the department will resurface and improve the drainage of two segments of the highway, the first from Livingston to Newark, the second in Harrison and Kearny. Statewide, the DOT has filled 175,675 potholes and plans to fill 215,000 by the end of June. Phalon said the potholes on Route 280 are comparable to those on other roadways. "We plan to spend $2.5 million on patching potholes (in the fiscal year)," she said. Codey said the eastbound lanes of the roadway near the Oranges are particularly bad. "These conditions pose a significant safety hazard to motorists and can cause costly damage to vehicles," he wrote. The potholes bothered Codey for months, but he decided to wait until spring to voice his concerns because working on roadways during winter may be challenging. "You're always going to have potholes come up during winter, but this winter wasn't extremely harsh. But it's 80 degrees. It'll be May soon. They don't have to worry about snow," he said. "There's no excuse to have potholes throughout that part of the highway." Newark resident Julia Nieves sees the potholes in the middle and right lanes during her commute on Route 280 to Pine Brook each day, but said she's seen worse. "Come to the Ironbound near Gotthardt Street or Delancey Street," she said.
