Clearly the shop makes money on the parts they sell. If they don't make that money of the parts, they will get it some other way.
They will usually stand behind their parts in the event there is an issue after installation. If your parts break, it's your problem...even if there was some installer error (good luck arguing that, BTW). Either DYI or bring it to a shop, but providing your own parts to a shop is a false economy.

...Brian did the work, charged a slightly higher labor rate since the parts were sourced elsewhere. In the end, it was an okay experience, although I had to spend at least 15 minutes "convincing" Brian that I wanted coilovers for the car.
In retrospect, it seems odd that I had to argue to get him to do work on my car and charge me money for it. I will likely not use him again since finding Greg's Repair in Natick (VW/Audi only). Much more convenient to me (across the street from my office) and very reasonable labor rates.

Another example is a totally non-stock item, like an APR bi-pipe, or upgraded turbos, or upgraded intercoolers.

typical with certain aftermarket/tuner parts, or used parts that you're getting a killer deal on (enough that it's worth the risk).

...you don't need and don't want those parts (unless they're stock).
Of course, he doesn't actually have any experience with suspension engineering - he just has a huge attitude as if he did.

...when you supply the parts. It depends on his mood, though. The last time I brought my own parts (catalytic converter), he charged his regular rate. Probably because he didn't want the hassle of sourcing the part himself.
