Between the 180 and 225 transverse 1.8t: Programming, turbo, intercoolers, BPV, and I am sure there are many beefed up hoses, lines and other little parts to compensate for the extra 45 hp.
Of course there are differences between the 150 and 170hp longitudinal 1.8ts.

the block is slightly different. All the 1.8Ts have forged alloy cranks, and forged pistons. I think the rods are pretty basic, and thats why they are usually what lets go under high boost.
One of the main differences is that on the longitudinal 1.8ts the cat is bolted directly to the turbo. I think this was an effort to strangle the 1.8t so it wouldnt hurt 2.8 sales. The 2000 awd transverse 1.8t (150hp) had a bigger, better flowing downpipe than my car came with (180hp). The reason for this is that the 1.8T was approaching the output levels of the VR6- even the 24 valve. There have been many stock dynos that show over 190hp on the stock AWP 1.8Ts. 2000-2001 transverse came with the original K03 which was good for around 210hp (maxed out). The 2001+ to current come with the K03s or K03-53 which is referred to as the K03 sport. This turbo will make over 225hp if it has all the necessary bolt ons. There have been a few dynos showing 210+ at the wheels on this turbo- but I suspect those guys will be replacing them soon. From conversation with B6 owners, the same turbo is now used on the A4. Do the longitudinal motors have the variable valve timing?
