Default Which of you would request 'hand wash only' for the dealer prep on your new car?

Mine arrives in a couple weeks and I saw a forum suggestion that the automatic wash and orbital buffing by the dealer is the worst thing for the new paint job. Is this worth the "huh?" from the dealer?

Default I told my dealer to strip the plastic and do NOTHING else. No wash, no wax, no nothing but take the

plastic off. I know a couple of people that have even gone as far as to drive home with the plastic still on, but that's a bit extreme for me.

Default I am really leaning towards this approach. Did they hesitate to comply?

Default Sort of. He gave me the "Our detailers prep $180K Porsche GT2's. I think they can

do your allroad." But when I said, "Yeah I'm sure they can, but I just don't want them to." He had no problem taking care of my request.

You just have to let them know that it's not that you don't trust their lot boys, you just love detailing cars and want to be the one to give your new car it's first round of TLC.

Default I would not even have the dealer remove the plastic. I picked my car with with the RAPGUARD still

on it. I let the dealer remove it and prep the car and I've been kicking myself ever since. They did a really crappy job on the paint. Nonetheless, they offered to pay for it to be fixed, thus making me a very happy customer.

Default What harm is there in removing the paint and handwashing it? They have agreed to that, only.

Default Well, I've seen the wash mitts they use and I would hesitate to wash my dishes with them.

Default My service advisor tells his lot boys to buy a new mitt whenever my car comes in :)

Though I've only let them wash it twice in four years. Both times it was so dirty that it wouldn't have mattered who washed it, it was going to get a little swirly.
