Default Ur Quattro turbo coupe 20v

Would anyone know can a 1990 ur quattro turbo 20v from europe be imported to the US and modified so it meets the government tests (DOT) in order to make it street legal? If so is it very expensive to do so?

Default Read on...

...The car has to meet emissions standards. It had to have the US bumpers, and I believe that it must be a model that has been crash tested at 5 MPH. The lights will also have to be changed to get it in. You're better off looking for a reasonably priced ur-Quattro, and just doing a 3b swap. The euro cars are just too hard too federalize. Even if you can sneak it in under the grey laws, you're still limited to something like 2500 miles a year. And yes, they will check.

I am not familiar with the term 3b swap, can you explain what this intails?

Default The 3b is the 20v turbo motor that was put into the 20v ur-Quattros...

...and the 200's. You can find wrecked 200's, once in a while, that that'll do the trick. Most people want something like three to four grand for the motor and ECU for these. The conversion can run fairly cheaply, if you're willing to do the work yourself. BIGMOUSE, on the 80-90/Cab board, just did a 3b swap into his car for something right around $4000 I think. He did ALL of the work himself, and it took him about a week of grunting and sweating to get it done. That's not too bad. Most of the other conversions done in the US have been done by "professionals", and have run into the $30,000 to $60,000 range. If you decide to go this route, stay clear from 2Bennett. The last one they did is in the current issue of European Car magazine. It cost just north of $50,000 to do. It took them 3 years, and it's still not done correctly. If you do decide to do the swap, and want it done correctly, have George at AJP tunning in Bristol, PA do it. George is **** about getting things right, and getting it to look like it came from the factory. I've personally seen two of the 1990 eS2 conversions that he did, and they were spotless. Trully magnificent work. HTH.

Default The 3b only came in the '91 200T, the previous years had MC 10v engines.

Default Uhhh, no. The 3b appeared in the 200 as well as the 20v ur-Quattro starting in 1989...

...Just because they didn't get them over here, doesn't mean there weren't any.

Default I meant Stateside. :)

Would've been nice to see an UrQ armed with a factory 3B in the States, though...

Default Technically, no, it was the RR not 3B in the ur q.

Although the RR is just about identical to the 3B.
