Default The closer to the switch, the better the chance of protecting it. (But you can do under hood)

Default I did mine from the battery.

Ran a new heavy duty cable, within a sheath, along the line of the factory cabling. Two relays mounted just behind the front panel ( on the chassis part that runs back towards the passenger cabin). Then individual wiring to both dip and main bulbs, wires all in a loom I made up. I used factory style plugs and can revert the whole within a few minutes.
If you wanted to be really extra safe it would be possible to relay the battery cable, at the battery, switching on the relay when the ignition is switched on.
Well worth the effort.

Default Close to the alternator..

I do all the wiring under the hood, including picking up the high and low beams signal.

(I used an old headlight bulb on one setup, and broke away all the glass. Soldered onto what was left of the metal terminals, so I had a plug that I could insert into the stock headlight connector. No cutting ANY stock wiring then, as I plugged into where the stock headlight bulb would have been to pick up the hight and low beams signals to trigger the relays..)

Look at the connector in the upper left, to see what I mean..

For a lot more headligh harness kind of stuff, look below at the link for an earlier post I made..
