Default The Mechanic Says ...

He says there is a noise coming from inside the driveshaft, and I need an entirely new driveshaft.

I know that Blau has a rebuild kit. What is inside the driveshaft that can be a problem?

Any experience with new or rebuilding driveshafts?

Thanks

Default Driveshafts are solid metal, your mechanic is an idiot.

Now if he meant the CV joints, that's different.

Actually, every driveshaft I've seen is tube, not solid. From trans to rear diff.

It's coming UPS. If it's solid, I'll let you know.

Axle Shafts are solid. From diff to wheel hub.

In any case, I'm buying a complete new one, with carrier. Found it for $420.

Problem solved. Thanks!

Default Actually, they are hollow. Why call someone an idiot if you don't know it yourself?

He may have a wrong diagnosis but driveshafts are for sure hollow.

Default I think Mike was reffering to the "halfshafts", I assumed Greg meant them too.....

Default I see, but halfshaft is halfshaft. Driveshaft is driveshaft....shouldn't mix the 2.

Default Re: The Mechanic Says ...

Driveshaft = from Transmission/transfer to rear differential.

1/2 shaft = from differential to wheel.

I was referring to the driveshaft. I went to the mechanic - we lifted the car. The driveshaft is making some kind of weird noise from inside. It wasn't coming from the carrier, ujoint or cv joints. Strange but true. The mechanic was right.

Yes, the driveshaft is hollow, just like every other drive shaft I've ever seen.

Got the driveshaft for $420 + $100 refundable core. Freight was prepaid both ways, $520 with the core from WholesaleImportParts.com ... Actually spoke to a live person. The UPS driver delivered it just now, and I ordered yesterday. Shipped from Orange County CA to San Diego CA.
So I like this guy already. It has two new CV joints, a new u joint with zerk and a new carrier. It's painted nice and pretty.

Happy happy joy joy.

Default Some CV halfshafts are hollow too. Not ours though. =) Glad to hear you got it fixed Greg.

Default Ouch.. Too late now, but you should have got it rebuilt

I've had great luck with a local rebuilder http://www.southernaxle.com/

Other folks recommend http://www.raxles.com/.

Both would have been far cheaper. =/
