Default Rust around the windshield scares me more than fender rust

I imagine any rust around the windshield gasket is going to be very expensive to repair. I think all cars like the 4ks with rubber windshield gaskets eventually succumb to rust around the windshield. THis also happen to my 79 rabbit. ANy advise on controlling this rust or tips on repairing it.
By the way my windshield gasket looks pretty good for 20 years old - but the audi dealer told me the replacement gasket is about $150. Maybe when I replace my cracked windshield I'll have them reuse the old gasket after all.

Default Every time I wash the car I clean out under the gasket. Leaves and junk under the gasket hold h2o

Thats what causes the rust - I think.

Default depends on where and how bad the rust is...

My '82 started getting a spot along the bottom. I lifted the gasket up a bit and sanded it best I could, then put on some of that paint-on rust stopper stuff, whatever it's called. (Can't remember right now) That was about 4 years ago, and it seems to have stopped it dead, and I live in rainey old washington state. But that may be wishful thinking if your getting it in a lot of places, or as I've seen before, all the way around.
