Default 89 200QT Rear Brakes

I'm stumped on the rear brakes.

What's the simplest way to push back the brake piston if I lack VW tool 3131? That is, what inventive methods have others dreamt up? Will a C-clamp do the trick?

Also, how the hell am I supposed to get the housing for the pads off so I can remove the rotor? Do I need a massive hex tool for those bolts in the back? Why'd they make the outside of those bolts *perfectly round*?! Frustration!

Sorry for lack of correct terminology... My Bentley is in the trunk, and it's cold outside.

Thanks in advance!

Default by far, the easiest way to get the piston back in the caliper is with the piston tool

the piston has to be rotated as it is pushed back into the caliper, not very easy to do with just the C-clamp. Local auto parts stores around here will loan the tool to you for free or close to it, you might want to check with them. TO get the caliper off the rotor initially, take off the two bolts, and pry up with a pry bar or screw driver.

Default I'd like to add Autozones have the tool loan thing.

But in a pinch I've used a strap wrench. Just pull the Black rubber boot back....CAREFULLY!!!...but I bought the tool long ago since I knew I would need it again....& again...& again.......

Default Re: The tool

Don't bother with the little cube caliper tool if you find or are offered a loan of it. Just as bad a knuckle buster as using water pump pliars. The decent tool looks like this sample from Tool Warehouse:

Default If they are not all crapped up, I have done this

I took some large needle nose pliers, spread them apart, put them on the center section that needs to rotate, and slowly turned the caliper in. I used the spread out handles for leverage and did not squeeze them together at all. Picture the needlenose pliers stickking straight out from the center axis of the caliper and rotating on that axis. Mine were not at all corroded, and that may not be the case for you.

Good luck.

Depends if the calipers have the two slots or an allen.

Default C-clamp

Do not use a C-clamp, I tries it once and cracked my rotor. But, if I had not done that I would not have found that the rotors were worn below the limit at some 80K miles. The specs are on the rotor itself.
