Default Check Engine Light

My check engine light has been going on occassionally when sitting at stoplights. If I tap the accelerator it will then go off. The idle appears to be OK, but I have noticed that the fuel pump is getting noisey, and I can't get more than 1.1 bar of boost. With hard acceleration, the car misfires and feels like it is starved for fuel. Other than that, the car is running well. Just installed new fuel filter, plugs, MM hose and plug wires. Its' a 91 200 Quattro with 181K. Will fuel pumps diminish in their performance or just quit working?? Is there a difference between the fuel pump for the 91 200 20V and the other type 44s'??? Any ideas??

Check engine light commonly lights when knock is detected by a knock sensor. The ECU normally will retard performance then too. Could be as simple as a loose connector at one of the two knock sensors. Could be bad sensor/s. Or you could have a knock issue.

Default My experience with fuel pumps is that they fail all at once, they don't loose life slowly

Best thing that you can do now is keep the tank at least 1/2 full since the gas is the only coolant for the pump. It is warning you with noise. Regulators and filters clog over time and fail slowly but pumps go out without warning. One minute they work and the next time you try to start the car they don't.
Best thing to do for long pump life is keep clean filters and a good regulator. If the pump is pushing lot of head or pressure to overcome resistance to flow due to a dirty filter it will heat up and die prematurally.
Hope that this helps
