Check engine light commonly lights when knock is detected by a knock sensor. The ECU normally will retard performance then too. Could be as simple as a loose connector at one of the two knock sensors. Could be bad sensor/s. Or you could have a knock issue.

Best thing that you can do now is keep the tank at least 1/2 full since the gas is the only coolant for the pump. It is warning you with noise. Regulators and filters clog over time and fail slowly but pumps go out without warning. One minute they work and the next time you try to start the car they don't.
Best thing to do for long pump life is keep clean filters and a good regulator. If the pump is pushing lot of head or pressure to overcome resistance to flow due to a dirty filter it will heat up and die prematurally. Hope that this helps
