Default My first Audi & new to the forum

Click the image to open in full size.

Hi all,

Tonight I picked up my first Audi--a 1985 5000S Turbo as a second/winter car. It has 250,xxx miles on it and is in incredible shape inside and out for its age--not a ding or speck of rust on it considering Wisconsin's salt covered roads. I was able to talk the dealer down to $400US, so I figured it was almost a risk-less investment. I'm not sure whether I'll get it in roadworthy condition and sell my 82 Jetta winter beater, sell it whole or part it out. Right now it seems to run good, but the brake pedal travels almost all the way to the floor, the steering rack is suspect, and most of the interior electrical components don't work. Plus the PO had a toggle switch wired into the ashtray that you must flip if it has trouble starting! Oh well, for $300 and a penchant for impulse purchases I'll see what I can make of it. I hope to make this my "cruiser", with my 95 GTI VR6 as my "go" car and my wife's 95 Jetta the "dependable" family car. So, it's nice to meet ya'll and I'm sure you'll be hearing from me in the coming weeks as I dig into this beauty.

If you do some searching on here, SJMAutotechnik, and Audifans archieves, you can get your 5kt to be a fast, reliable family hauler.

You may want to think about the turbo, early cars do NOT have water cooling on the turbo whereas the later '85s should. VIN split is 034551+ for H2O. You have the KH code engine, 136hp, automatic trans only.

$300 isn't a bad price in all honesty...Congrats and welcome, get the Bentley manual for it, and warm up your SK, Craftsman, Snap-On, MAC, etc tools

Default welcome

Good to have another new audi convert. I just got my first "real" audi about a month ago myself. (been driving vw forever) As for you interior electrical. start with cleaning all the switches. an investment into a digital multimeter would be good also. sears sells one for 20 bucks. if cleaning dont help then its time for the junkyard. if it come to this do yourself a favor and findout what an ISV is and grab a few while your out there =) after a trip to the yard and about 5 new switches all works ecxecpt for cruise and door locks (bastards want to much for what i need) once again welcome to the world of audi.

Default glad to have you aboard

Enjoy your "new" 85. For $300, you can't go too far wrong. Suggest that you read back through the many pages of this forum. You will start to see a pattern where others have found trouble with their 5000s. You will find a lot of damn good advise. Well worth your time to do some reading. Also, good to type in a few "key words" in the "search" section when looking for specific information. Again, welcome aboard.

Default Nice looking car!

Get a good quality multimeter and you can attack the electrical maladies one by one.

When I bought my old TQW, the heater blower didn't work and 3 out of 4 windows did not work. Turns out the accordion boot wiring in the drivers door was toast. Re-did the wiring and all windows worked.

Good luck with the new car.

Default Great looking '85! Plus you...

You got it for $300! That's great considering the fact that is says $990 on the windshield.

Welcome to the forum..
