Gotta take it all back.
On a hunch, I reversed the polarity of the batteries (turned them over). Works like a champ. Clue for those who take the batteries out of their IR keys, and didn't make a note of how they came out: The "+" legend by the battery hole means that the "+" side of the battery faces UP (toward the slide-off cover). Same goes for the "-" legend. OBTW - Wal-Mart sells those V386 batteries pretty cheap. As compared to Radio Shack, who wanted $5/battery. |

Good to know on the battery costs, I spent a small fortune replacing mine a few months ago.

Even though it works, it doesn't have the range it did before. Even with new batteries, it doesn't work much more than a foot away from the sensor.
