the new radio is in...have some questions

took about 6 hours to rip out the old head unit, my old kenwood sirius fm modulator, and my hackjob of an ipod input; and to install a new head unit, a new sirius module, and a new ipod interface.

the biggest PITA was finding a place to put the sirius and ipod modules. each is about 1" tall, 6" wide and 6" deep. turns out there's not much place to stick those...i spent about 2 hours tearing up my interior trying to find some space. i was limited by cable length, so i couldn't just throw them in the trunk. i ended up finding space right above the ECU after i removed a big plastic piece that held 4 fuses...the fuses just dangle next to the ecu now. turns out the fitment is so tight, i didn't even need to secure the modules....they're held in snugly by the pressure of the overlying plastic plate.

some remaining issues that i need advice with:

1. i removed the OEM cell antenna and routed the sirius antenna through the hole. now i need to figure out how to weather seal it...ideas?

(the crap in the foreground is bits of the double-sided tape that held the old antenna on that i haven't removed yet)

2. the filler plate around the radio isn't a perfect fit...any idea where i can get a better one?

3. i get a POP when switching input sources. looks like the Alpine is momentarily dropping the amp turn-on signal...any idea how to rectify this?

4. i munged one of my front seat bolts...will need to get a replacement (i was trying to see if i could fit the modules under the seat)

that's it...the wiring harnesses i made worked perfectly

clear silicone will seal that just fine.

Try crutchfield for a better adapater plate

The Alpine unit probably isnt dropping the amp, which is why you hear a pop. Might want to try getting in touch with JamesR on this one. Something like a commons ground point might help, but James would know better.

Hardware store.

because it doesn't cycle at all. when the headunit is on, it's on.

regarding the module size, thats why i told you to get the 9856 because it doesn't require any module and the interface is much faster and more robust than the original version.

spiralsmurf AudiWorld Super User Garage is empty, add now Join Date: Jan 2005 Posts: 3,641	use lexol clear silicone to seal the hole. i dont think it is the amp turnon lead cycling because it doesn't cycle at all. when the headunit is on, it's on. regarding the module size, thats why i told you to get the 9856 because it doesn't require any module and the interface is much faster and more robust than the original version.
