Default Rear Brake Woes...

So yeah sunday night my car started making grinding noises in the right rear. I immediately thought the caliper guidepins are shot. Sure enough, after looking at them this morning on the lift... they are pretty much welded in the sleeve, so now... I have to order 2 new(reman) calipers, 2 slotted/cross-drilled rotors, mintex red box pads, SS rear lines, new e-brake cable, since that hasn't worked in years, and some ATE Super Blue brake fluid. Parts alone are almost $600. DAMN AUDI!</RANT>

Default Confused??

If your caliper guide pins are frozen why do you have to buy rear calipers? The caliper carriers (incl. guide pins) are available separately. ECS has them for $ 70, and Autohaus for $ 40 (I believe).

Default You hate your car because you neglected a well known maintenance item? Sorry, no...

sympathy from me. Rear brakes need to be checked at least once a year, probably best in the fall during the switch over to winter tires. At that time, you should check and lube the e-brake cable and the guide pins - at the very least.

Default Well also the pistons boot is torn on the right... so i get a new one for right...

gotta do everything in pairs... I don't wanna do a half *** job of one side, and leave the other. So both sides get new calipers, and also the e-brake isn't working, so I figure why not fix it with new calipers and be done with it. but hey it was a morning rant that is all!

Default BLAH, I did check it in the fall when I pulled the summer wheels off. Lines were fine...

and both sides had even pad wear on the inside and outside pads... I didn't have time to take em apart. Dave, you never have anything nice to say lately. I know you were just pointing it out. But you don't know what I check and don't check. By the way it was a rant not for you to pity me!

Default I appreciate that... I thought about just rebuilding them... But new ones are easier to just put on.

And i figure that it will be a better investment in the future.

Default You doing it yourself?

I gave the car to Claudio, cause with classes 5 days a week, I don't have time to get it done! And i don't want a catastrophic failure by Friday!

Default I am SOOOO sorry you didn't have time to take them a part. Poor you. My heart goes out to you.

Of course, it must have been a reverse miracle that all those problems occurred in few months.

My point was don't come here whining about something that you could have prevented IF you took proper care of your car. I can hardly wait for your "my timing belt broke and my engine is screwed" post.

Signed, Uncle Red Foreman.
