that is why it is reccommended you use the cam locking tool. Its very dangerous to even crank the engine over when the timing is wrong.
However, I'm suprised the engine will even run if the timing is off. Maybe you got lucky and something else is the source of your problems.

Always, always, always use the cam tools. I know lots of people here don't. Yes, you don't need the tools to get the belt back on the same way the old one was...but it is right? All you can be sure of is that it's as good as the old one, plus or minus any differences in the two belts. Our cars were designed with infinitley adjustable timing. Setting the timing correctly is the best power/fuel economy mod you can do.
Check the link, which contains a few other links about the timing belt replacment on my C5. The C5 is a little different, but the timing belt procedure and cam timing importance are the same.

any petrol engine but the fuel distributor is also cam-belt driven so it has to be correct.
I do not know the exact procedure for adjusting the injection timing but I do know it is critical for performance, economy and emissions. With regard to the leaking injectors, try losening them off then gently re-tighten them but try to move the copper washer as you tighten. This all allow the washer to seat properly.

But the cam timing is also infitely adjustable on the diesels too. And I agree with Edd that the pump timing should be set when the belt is changed too.

I checked the timing again. But it's very very exact. I turned the flywheel to the correct position and used the special tool for checking the timing. It's well.
BUT I tried my friend's MAF sensor, and my car regained the power. Not all, nearly 70%. How can i clean the MAF sensor? Everybody say no way to do this. I've to buy an other one. Isn't it? I've VAG-COM and I adjusting the injection timing by computer to the right position. |
