Basic Question: What does it mean to "turn" my rotors?
hi all..
planning on doing all my brake pads soon... I will not be replacing my front rotors (they were replaced when previous owner last replaced pads)... what does it mean to "turn" the rotors? is it essential? otherwise, what do I look for to see if I need to turn them?
thanks!

The shop removes the rotors from your car, mounts them in a lathe and...........
literally shave imperfections from the rotor a little at a time until the rotor has a uniform surface. This is providing that the rotor is within it's acceptable wear limit or thickness (marked on the inside of the rotor hat).

Re: Basic Question: What does it mean to "turn" my rotors?
rotor with uneven surface will not contact the pad correctly. So rotors with uneven surfaces need to be refinished. Another moment. If rotor wears on the outside faster then on the inside. When you put new brake pads, they will contact it under some angle. If the angle is sevear, the piston of the brake caliper will be locked. You can measure the thicknes of the rotor. The difference in thickneses in thickest and thinest parts should not exeed 1mm.
