Default Things Mom never told you about your CV joint

First off replacing the cv joint and or boot can go 2 ways.. hard or easy. This all depends on the pinch bolt. See photo above, this bolt allows you to free the upper control arms and have clearance to remove the inner or outer CV joint for repair/replacement. I sugest you PB blaster, liquid wrench, rost off, or WD-40 this thing repeatedly over several days prior to starting this job, praying to the deity of your choice might help as well. If you break off the bolt head you are doomed.. doomed I say!! Also (I'll post pictures separately) there are several axle bolts out there for allroad and A6s. The have different bolt thickness and heads. The neat thing is by looking at the head (allen 17mm, 15mm or hex 27mm)there is no way to tell them apart unless you know what you're looking for, make sure you have a 17mm allen or 27mm hex. I ended up going from a 17mm allen to a 27mm hex head. All things considered if the pinch bolt comes free and you have the correct axle bolt figure 1 to 1.5 hours per side.

Default are you saying that the bolts that hold halfshaft to transaxle are 1 time use bolts and you got the

wrong 1's? i have heard the big outbound nut that hold halfshaft on(at brake rotor) is 1 time use.

Default Go the other way--> lower control arms <--- Don't even mess with this pinch bolt!

......you can use a punch or puller to help free up the lower ball joints in this process- loosen the 18mm nuts on both lower joints and leave nut on -even with top of bolt- whilest freeing ball joint. This prevents control arm damdage and from flying loose and hitting something (ones ankle or the ground). Then remove half shaft from trany (inner) side first--> six allen bolts. Then push half shaft up on trany side while pulling inward (turning hub) on the outer end of the shaft. The axle should have enough room to slide free. Remember to first free up the axle shaft bolt while car is on the ground --> with hand brake on-- these bolts are crazy tight! It also helps to turn the wheels slighly to the right to create room between the torque bar and the side of the car. I like to pull up to free these bolts some people like to push down and/or stand on the breaker bar, I don't recommend the latter but if so turn the steering wheel left slightly instead. Remember, Have Fun and sing silly songs as you work on this, It helps
