Default California DMV question

Wanted to ask if anyone has an answer to this question specific to California.

I'm thinking about buying a used Audi and bringing it back to California, had a question regarding the DMV.

Has anyone registered a car in California that DIDN'T have the California emissions "option" from Audi already on their car? If so, any problems, or is it no big deal?

Guess this would apply to anyone who either moved here and brought their car with them, or bought a car out of state and brought it in after purchase.

From what I can tell, Audi only offered the emissions "option" for CA and the Northeast. Didn't know if the Allroads were emission specific by states.

Thanks in advance:

Joe

Default They're all 50 state cars, as far as I know

I bought mine from a guy in NJ in December and asked all the same questions. Was told by the collective genius of this board not to worry, all Audi's, in fact most new cars in general, are all 50 state cars now. It was really a piece of cake at the DMV, just have all your paperwork ready. There is a good checklist of what you need on the DMV website.

I'm sure if you search my handle in the archives you'll see the responses I got to the same questions. Was probably around October/November last year.

Default No difference.

I bought my 03 allroad in Chicago area and brought it back to CA. No emission problem. it is 50 states car. Registration fee and taxes are the same as you would buy it in CA.

Just make sure you get the title/cert of ownership from the dealer before going to DMV.

Default You do have to have the DMV inspect the car though...

before you can register it, you have to have it pass smog and a "safety inspection".

I bought a used 4000s quattro from a guy in Virginia. When I registered it I had to pass a safety inspection and smog. It is tricky dealing wiht the license plate issue, because they make you turn in the out of state plates or send them back to the original owner. You then get a temporary sticker to put in the window, then eventually your new plates arive.

Default What is everyone's take on buying a Touareg TDI used out of state and bringing it to California?

I know a new one is out of the question; but how about a used one? Would Calif let you register it if used and having enough mileage?

Everytime I've questioned CA DMV about this I get a very generic answer that doesn't contain a "yes or "no".

Default just register it out of state, drive it around for 90 days (don't get a ticket if it's here though)

and then transfer it to CA thru a non Governmental agency.

The TDI is a bit pricey.
