Press the FF and FR buttons one press at a time, sluggish movement is normal (just is).
The firmware should be shown in the upper right hand corner of your iPod. If you bought it recently on eBay, then it's most likely 2.05 or 2.10 like everyone else's. Upgrade to 2.17 which is the latest. SouthboroAudiGuy has links in his signature with good, detailed notes on updating procedures. Look for his posts.
