In 2002 VAG decided to go with a CAN bus system and what it means is that the ignition code as well as the illumination commands are actually sent to the HU via the bus system instead of a wire directly related to ignition and illumination.
Since your car does not have the CAN bus it can't send these commands to the HU so the HU has no way of telling if the car or the lights are on or off. There would be a need to make an interface that would take the ignition lead and the illumination lead as the input and send fake commands to the radio accordingly. There is no such thing yet so unless you want/can develop such thing you're SOL.
