Default install opinions

I currently have my amp, crossovers and EQ in my wheel well.

That is OK, but I would like to get my spare back.
I was thinking of putting my equipment on the rear parcel shelf. Instead of mounting it like many hanging down from the rear deck in the trunk compartment, I was thinking of cutting into the rear deck and flushing the equipment so that it actually sits in the cabin area

example from Mcintosh website in a BMW 5 series.
I was wondering what you thought of the location and has any one done this, especially in an a6. I think my installer might even be able to change the color of the meters to have them red to match the interior, I think.
TIA

Default Requires lots of cutting into the rear deck

you might mess the the structural integrity of the car. I got a queston for you. Does the a6 have a hump in the spare tire well like the a4's, and if so how did you go around that to fluch them in the well, what did u do u raised the floor a bit like a false floor if you know what im talking about.

Default Re: Requires lots of cutting into the rear deck

I didn't mess with the hump, just put a board that was supported by the areas on each side of the hump and made a false floor that was only about 1 inch higher than what was there already. I only needed about 3- 4 inches of depth for the install. it was the best way to keep everything fairly stealth without going nuts.
hope that helps. guess i am going nuts now with the install

Default Might as well leave $4000 in small unmarked bills on your dash...

Default I prefer stealth. Others don't need to see what's inside, unless you want to tempt them into

stealing it.

Default I like this idea.. I may explore it more with my installer...

My installer said he'd cut me a custom rear deck out of MDF for about $100. Now that would primarily just be the top portion. The idea was to have more vented areas and not just rely on the stock 2 speaker enclosure areas to let the subs neter the cabin from the rear. He'd be leaving the metal underlaying intact.

As teamishun mentions, you may have to end up cuttung up to much of that underlayer, which wouldn't be a good idea. But you may be able to just have a beefier rear deck itself made. Kind of like a false floor but it would be a false rear deck.

I'm going to have to ask my installer about that.

The other option is to mount the crossover, amps, and eq in the sidewall of the trunk. If you have the subs in there now, use the other sidewall.

Yet another option is an entire false floor. You said you only need a few inches, so make an entire false floor of the trunk and put the amps right behind trhe rear seat underneath the false floor. This will make trhe trunk look 100% stock and still let you use the spare tire.

Default Unless it were a show car I wouldn't risk something like that...

Someone broke into my 93 Accord and at a movie theater in the suburbs and stole a leather backpack with some work papers in it. I can't imagine something like that amp lasting for more than 20 minutes in any downtown area.
