I was cleaning out my desk yesterday and stumbled across an article in my December 1995 Road & Track magazine.

It's amazing how closely the prototype matches the production car.

I sure am glad they changed the interior from the prototype to the production model. This interior is pretty strange. For reference sake, this article is on page 35 of the December 1995 issue of Road & Track magazine.

Default Is that ultrasuede?!??! :)

I had forgotten all about that. I don't understand the move to suede interiors in concepts. The merc SLR was sueded all to hell as well, if I remember the pics correctly.

Default Especially since "The TT Story" says not a single panel remained unchanged for production!

Default I totally agree, suede overkill. BUT, the production TT uses it sparingly (and tastefully)...

...between the two rear seatbacks. I've always wondered why it was there. Perhaps it's a throwback to the concept car's interior? I think it's a nice touch, but I'm glad it's only an accent.

I'm glad they left the grille black on the production cars. I don't like color-matched grilles. I wonder what that little tiny light in the upper-outside corner of the headlight cluster is...

Default Between the 2 rear seatbacks? Because it rubs together there?

I remember getting that issue of R&T and thinking that the TT looked really weird, but the kind of weird that you can't look away from -- "intriguing weird" I guess! Those big, spoked wheels in that low-slung coupe. Retro-chic!

Honestly (and how many cars can you say this about), I think the production box looks much better than the show car, especially the sweeping C-pillars.

What amazes me is the detail. When someone like GM flaunts a show car, the production body and maybe the proportions may end up somewhat like the show car, but the details (interior themes, trim, wheels & tires) never make it. Not even close. Often the show car hasn't a chance because of practicality (e.g. bumper height vs. federal regs).

I am amazed that the TT made the transition about 97% intact, and that, I think, is why it is so different, unique and desirable.
