Default Transmission Questions

My transmission will go in reverse perfectly but in drive it will go some times like it should and other times it will not move. So I need to know if I should try and change the fluid and see how it is or if it is cooked? I just got the car and I want to get it fixed asap so any answers would help.

Default she is probably on the way out...find a ZF capable Tranny shop and have them look at it.
