Hello all. This is my first post. G28 engine speed sensor...questions about sensor location etc..
I have owned my 98 4.2 ABZ for 5 years now and thanks to this forum, the VAG and the Bentley, I haven't had any trouble diagnosing/fixing any issues I have had. Right now the car turns over with ease, but won't start. No CEL either. Here is the code I get:
Control Module Part Number: 4D0 907 557 M
Component and/or Version: 4.2L V8/4V MOTR AT D02
Software Coding: 01273
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-00 - -
Readiness: N/A
When I searched this forum, I noticed Tozo, TwinCitiesA8 and a few others have had issues with this.
I did the troubleshooting procedure in the bentley and I have confirmed that I have a dirty or bad engine speed sensor (G28). Now I just need to get to the engine speed sensor itself to either clean it, check the gap (it says thickness of spacer between sensor and trans should be 4.5mm?), or replace it. The Bentley shows the location as # 10 and the 3 pin grey plug as # 12. How can I access this sensor? Through the wheel well? IMO the Bentley is a bit vague on this subject.
Also, what the oem part number of this part? I have seen both 01L 927 321 & 077-905-381-E listed on this forum.
Thank You!!

You can get to it from the driver's side wheel well.
Engine speed sensor on the left side of the picture. If you reach down behind the engine (driver's side under the hood) you can grab the connector for the G28. I had a same problem. The cable was too close to the exhaust and melt the wires together. I pulled them apart, cleaned it up, and it still works.

01L 927 321is the vehicle speed sensor, not engine speed. Plate 927-90.
Looks like it's 077 905 381 E
See plate 906-60. Took a while to find it, but where it is makes sense. That's the ECU plate. The ETKA description for that part is "inductive sender". Really descriptive.

Update: Took 10 mins to access it. The sensor has a 5mm allen bolt holding it in.
I thoroughly cleaned the sensor, but the car still won't start. Time for a new sensor. And Jim, you are correct. The part number for the (G28) Engine Speed Sensor is 077 905 381 E.

I think the Bentley is mixed up concerning their troubleshooting procedure of the G28 sensor.
My A8 is a 98 4.2 quattro. Engine code is ABZ, correct? Well, when I go the the ABZ troubleshooting procedure for DTC P0322, it shows a different rectangle shaped 3 pin plug than the one in my car. When I go to the AKB, AUX, AYS troubleshooting procedure for DTC P0322 which should apply for the 00 and 01 A8, it shows the oval shaped 3 pin plug that is in my car????
Is my car wrong or is the Bentley? LOL. Tozo, do you recall the shape (oval or rectangle) of the inner part of the 3 pin male/female grey plug on your 97?

To inspect the harness, I removed everything from the sensor to the 3 pin grey plug completely from
the car. But the Bentley is showing the oval shaped plug in my car in the (00-01) AKB, AUX, AYX troubleshooting procedure, and shows a pic of the 00-01 rectangle shaped plug in the ABZ 97-99 procedure. The thing is, these procedures and specified values required for each are quite different. Do I go by the AUX procedure? Or go by the ABZ procedure and disregard the plug shape? The Bentley has me soooo confused on this one and it should be very simple. Thanks Tozo.
