what is that thing by the cam pos. sensor??

the other day I was looking down by the cam pos. sensor on a 98 A8 and I noted a broken black wire
that attached to small black box that was bolted to the side of the head with 4 brown ground wires I grounded the black wire out and it blew the ecm fuse, anyone know what that thing is called or what it does???

If so....post here....and I can tell you it wasn't a ground! But you already figured that out... ;-)

Called Audi-they don't know what it is. Possibly a suppressor or capacitor??
