However, the turn signal lever is not that hard to remove, maybe a 45 minute job at most. You can TRY to clean it after removal by spraying it with electrical contact cleaner but it probably won't do any good. After replacing my signal assembly a few years ago, I opened the old one and found the contacts almost worn away from use. I don't think it can be "opened" without destroying it, but I don't really recall. They pretty much all wear out with enough use, so buying a used one is probably not a good alternative.

Thank you RMsALFA, I finally got it all off once I realized that both the left and right stalks were attached to both each other and that column housing that I was having such a hard time with, so the whole piece just came off in one. I replaced it with a stalk from a 100cs I found in the junk yard and everything works great! I'll pay attention to post dates from now on, so thank you.

My 01 A6 2.7T did exactly what you describe. I took the hazard switch relay apart and cleaned the contacts, but they were pretty worn. Hazards are a separate set of contacts, so it figures that the hazards still worked OK. Worked for about a month then quit again. New relay fixed it.(three years ago and still fine). 128K miles and no issues for now.
Not to hijack your thread, but to keep it running like new, here's what I've done. Timing belt and associtaed parts at 90K miles (no problems, just a good idea). New pre-cat oxygen sensors at 100K miles. (Codes on one Bank), Auxilliary water pump (under the intake manifold) due to a leak, new overflow reservoir (due to leak). Cleaned cruise control contacts in the turn signal stalk to fix failed criuse control. Had tranny (Tip-tronic) rebuilt at 95K miles due to torque converter lockup failure. Seals were shot in the troque converter. Just my opinion, but the 2.7 is a great engine if you do the maintenance as recommended, change the oil regularly and use synthetic. Just my experience. Others may disagree. |
