Default Trans Issue codes PO730 and PO741

I have a 2000 A6 2.7T

I was driving home one evening and all of the sudden the car shut down. I pulled off the road turn the ignition off, turned it back on cranked the car a couple times and it strated right back up. Put the car into gear, and nothing. Just went to nuetral. Had it towed first to my brothers house who is a mechanic, ran the diagnostic tool on it it which through up codes PO730 and PO741 did some research and about all we found was it could be a speed sensor or transmmision fluid, replaced the input speed sensor and transmission fluid and nothing. So, towed it to audi and after their diagnostics, the decided I needed a new Trans, 6000.00 dollars worth of a new trans. They could give me no further insight to the issue, just that the trans needed to be swapped.

Now, my thought is after tearing apart the valve body and inspecting the transmission, there is no physical damage, nor was there any noise, slipping, etc that you would typically see with a physical transmission failure is that it is something electronic or some piece of the trans that does not warrant a 6000.00 dollar expense. So if anyone has any thoughts they would be greatly appriciated.

thank you

sorry to hear that..
but I am surprised that dealer will not do more diagnostics.
They should check Multi-function switch which is located near transmission and check for transmission ECU, usually these two are the first that will disable transmission before the mayor failure happens,
I suspect either of these could be a problem, I would perhaps go for at least 3 different opinions, try to find shop mechanic that specializes in AUdi cars..

Thanks for the response, They did not bring up either of those issues, but told me if it was the TCM, that the car would go into safe mode and I would be able to drive it in 3rd gear... So i don't know. I had planned on calling a couple of different dealers, just thought I would try here as well

Friend of mine couple years back had this problem on his 98 A4, after car got towed, dealer told him that his torque converter was dead, no response, dealer at first wanted to replace multi-switch but then advice to get new tranny that more problems could be hidden inside, he refused and we towed the car back to his house, where we decided to take and check what the problem is, we have found couple problem the cable that is attached to multi-switch was loose so we followed the instructions from Bentley how to adjust and correct this, of course this didn't fix the problem , but we started to get some response from multi switch, check every solenoid with ohm meter and everything was good but every time we touched wires that went to multi-switched no response from VAG, we check the wires and found surprised half of the wires corroded , three wires were so corroded that when we removed transmission ECU located under passenger front carpet we found the corrosion followed right to the tranny ECU, we couldn't believe it, we have replaced those three wires from switch right to tranny ECU cleaned all connectors wires that were corroded, after that car turn on without problems and tranny was working , then we replace tranny fluid and car was driving like new..
