Evaporated engine coolant!!! and ECT sensor location no where to be found...
so I went to my local Audi dealer to see if my ignition failure was caused by ECT sensor on my 2001 A6 2.8 fwd, but their service was very disappointing. I asked them to help me locate the ECT sensor, but no one took initiative to look under my hood, but rather showed me a tiny schematic of the engine and the parts surrounding it.
I just decided to purchase the ECT sensor, O-ring, and go with my instinct in finding the old ECT sensor. Yes, I checked the tech page and there's a wonderful guideline on replacing the ECT sensor, but that was for 99 A6. For my 01 A6, the ECT sensor was nowhere to be found. It must be somewhere behind the engine, but no luck.
During the process, I mistakenly opened the engine coolant tank. All of sudden, the red coolant started to boil and splash all over the place. The whole liquid leaked and eventually evaporated itself......
My question is 1) where the .... is the ECT sensor located, 2) are other parts surrounding the coolant tank in danger because of the leak and the splashing? 3)which coolant brand (or part number)should I buy or does it not matter?
Here are some pictures, hope some of you can point it out or at least guide me to its location.

This part looked like it, but I'm guessing it's not

this is the new ECT sensor. Got it from the dealer ( 059 919 501A).

Bentley gives a single page for all A6 2.8 engines, 1998-2005
Should be colored blue, toward the rear passenger side (rear of the engine block), with a blue 4-pin connector "For Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor -G62-." The cooling system components page shows it plugging vertically into the top of the rear coolant pipe which runs transversely across the back of the engine. Might have get that accordion hose out of the way. Good luck..
BTW, do NOT put the wrong coolant in, get the pink stuff indicated on the top of the plastic expansion tank, G12 I think.

Do you have the schematics or the picture of that part?...
I tried to find it for an hour, stuck both of my hands behind/beside the engine, but no luck.
Would it be possible for you to scan that single page and post the picture? Thanks!
Oh, and is the ECT sensor suppose to be blue, or is the connector blue?
Thanks again

Can't do that, but here's the location as given:
Schematics really won't help you much more than this.. illustration of component location says, verbatim:
"G62 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
- In coolant pipe behind intake manifold
- With ECT sensor -G2- (one housing)"
.. and the arrow points thus:

Before you start, you might want to pick up an extra clip to hold the sensor in place.
I just replaced my aux coolant pump temp sensor (similar deal but on the other side of the engine). The plastic clip broke when I was removing it. This was Saturday, after the dealer had closed, so I had to improvise. If you have a metal clip, you're in good shape, just don't let it fly off into the deep, dark recesses.
Also, here's a diagram from the S4 Self Study Guide. The sensor you're after is similar but on the passenger side of the engine.

Squeeze down on the top of the metal clip to release, don't pry it off or it might go flying
.. that's if you're talking about the tricky little metal spring clips that hold the electrical connector to things like injectors, sensors and such. Hadn't heard of that 'squeeze' trick when I did my aux water pump job, and had nightmares of dropping those little fellas down in the depths.

I was referring to the plastic clip that retains the actual sensor, but that is worth mentioning...
I think some people (like me!) recently learned that's how those particular electrical connectors work.
Much easier just squeezing on the metal clip!

Yes, I've removed the air intake(?) rubber piece.. and was..
looking for the ECT sensor, but the sun went down and I had to head back to my apt (i don't have a garage). I'll be looking for it again tomorrow.
Another thing that came up was this.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/111747/2.2.jpg">
that valve was apparently broken, the blue circled parts were taped with electrical tape.
I don't know if the previous owner broke it or my local audi dealer, but that piece just came off.
Does anyone know what that piece is for?
thanks

That's the phlogiston return pipe for balancing the steam compressors
Dunno ;p
It's a fair bet you should replace it. If it came off in your hand, take to the dealer parts guy.
