retarded question but....what does a regular halogen bulb look like through a HID projector?

Same as a non HID projector headlamp ;)
Kinda like a high beam projector on a Touareg if you get to check one out.

is the beam pattern the same?

From what I remember, no. Because the light output originates from a different location. ex: the bulb may have a reflector that directs light output up or down.
